The Lexus NX was released in 2014 and has since enjoyed modest success in the Netherlands, with around 1500 units sold. However, the brand is growing rapidly worldwide. With the launch of the plug-in hybrid NX450h+, Lexus is continuing this trend. Irwin from InstaAutoVlog has tested the model and shared his findings.

This article in short:

  • Competition: The Lexus NX aims at models such as the BMW X3, Volvo XC60 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. It distinguishes itself with rich standard equipment and a hybrid powertrain.
  • Design and Finish: It features a dynamic design, premium materials, and a high-quality finish with advanced features such as e-Latch door unlocking.
  • Comfort and performance: the car has a wealth of standard equipment including climate control, powerful engines (up to 309 hp), and a good electric range.
  • Price and variants: the Lexus is available from 61,995 euros depending on the drivetrain and version.

Positioning

The Lexus NX competes with cars like the BMW (i)X3, the Volvo XC60, and the Mercedes-Benz GLC. The Audi Q5 is also a direct opponent. The distinguishing feature? A piece of rich standard equipment, Lexus’ Red Carpet Treatment, and the standard of a hybrid drivetrain.

Dimensions

At 4.66 meters long and almost 1.87 meters wide, it’s a little more compact than some rivals, but it wins in height at 1.66 meters. This gives the NX a robust but never cumbersome appearance, befitting its class.

F-Sport version

In the dark, the sharply designed LED lighting at the front and rear provides a strong appearance and a recognizable signature. The grille is a striking detail, especially in the F-Sport version. This test version stands out because of that grille, black roof rails and window frames, and matching black exterior mirrors. The 20-inch F-Sport Design wheels enhance the sporty appearance, especially in combination with the F-White paint.

Premium interior

The Lexus NX offers a luxurious interior: everything feels solid and pleasant. On top of the dashboard is a standard 14-inch touchscreen for infotainment from the Business Line; the basic version has a 9.8-inch screen. Navigation and wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto are standard.

E-Latch Door Openers

The seating comfort is good and the support for both elbows is also excellent. Only the axially limited adjustable steering wheel could be better. The NX is equipped with a partially digital instrument cluster and e-Latch door unlocking. These door openers ensure that you cannot open a door when traffic approaches from behind.

Details and finishing

In the Lexus NX, details and finesse are abundant. The operation of elements such as the center armrest feels light and well thought out, while the climate control, with nanotechnology, helps prevent not only unpleasant odors but also dry skin. The sound insulation also ensures peace in the interior.

Details and finishing

As standard, you get a nine-speaker audio system with a subwoofer. For those who want more, the President trim level includes a 17-speaker Mark Levinson system with 1,800 watts of power for a premium listening experience.

1500 kilo towing capacity

The back seat has enough space for three adults. The boot capacity is the same for all versions. It measures 520 liters and can be increased to a maximum of 1411 liters. A strong point of the PHEV is the towing capacity. The normal hybrid as 2WD and AWD can tow a maximum of 1000 kilograms, after ticking the Explorer Pack costing 2495 euros this is increased to 1500 kilograms. The pack includes a detachable tow bar and a nose weight of 100 kilograms.

Battery range

The entry-level Lexus NX is the 350h. This is front-wheel drive and has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine that works together with a 192 hp and 270 Nm strong electric motor. There is also a 350h AWD with an additional 54 hp and 121 Nm strong electric motor on the rear axle.

The test was driven with the plug-in hybrid 450h+. The basic drivetrain is the same as that of the 350h AWD. Thanks to an 18.1 kWh lithium-ion battery, the electric power can be used for longer: around 74 (Luxury Line) or 69 kilometers according to the WLTP test method.

Battery management

The car is equipped with a single-phase 6.6 kW on-board charger, while the heat pump also ensures a usable range in winter. Interesting is the smart software that ensures that the battery remains in top condition, even if you do not charge it often. The battery is regularly discharged and recharged to keep all cells active. Lexus also offers a 10-year warranty on the battery.

Powerful and smooth drivetrain

The combined power is 309 hp and in 6.3 seconds you are from 0 to 100 km / h. The top speed is 200 km / h. Pleasant is the high electric power of a combined 246 hp, about 100 hp more than the competition.

Consumption when the battery is empty

If the battery is empty after driving about 65 kilometers, the NX changes into a normal hybrid. The electric motor is tempered and that also ensures a still low fuel consumption at that moment. An average of 1 in 16 is then easily achievable; an excellent value.

Driving dynamics

In terms of driving dynamics, the NX is positioned between the more compact LBX and its larger brother, the RX. For example, it steers surprisingly directly and feels agile and manageable, partly thanks to its size. On the highway, it is the calmness of the chassis that convinces you, as well as the excellent sound insulation, straight-line stability, and the excellent Lexus Safety System+, including a level 2 autonomous driving assistant.

AVS dampers

While the Volvo, Mercedes, and Audi can be optionally equipped with air suspension, this is not the case with Lexus. The brand focuses on so-called AVS dampers. This Adaptive Variable Suspension suspension is standard on the F-Sport and President Line and ensures that the NX remains flat at all times. This can provide extra comfort, but especially when driving down speed bumps, a more flexible damping could provide a bit more comfort.

Prices and versions

The Lexus NX is available as a 350h for 61,995 euros. The 350h AWD costs at least 71,995 euros. Plug-ins are possible with the 450h+ from 65,995 euros and the tested 450h+ F-Sport Line is listed for 74,995 euros.
