With a history that goes back some 125 years, Renault has an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Entire generations have grown up with it. Think of the 5, but more recently of the Twingo, Clio, or Mégane. And that history repeats itself. In a studio in Paris, Irwin from InstaAutoVlog recently got to know the new Renault 4, which will be in the showroom in the summer of 2025.

A real friend to all

The original Renault 4 was a game-changer that mobilized the middle class. This iconic model transcended social boundaries and was embraced by a wide audience—bakers, gallery owners, firefighters, and mayors. Generations grew up with it, resulting in impressive sales figures: Renault sold at least 8 million units in three decades.

The Renault 4 as we all know it, is here in the rally version.

Modern interpretation

The new Renault 4 must challenge itself to carry this rich heritage into a whole new era. Unlike its predecessor, it follows in the footsteps of the recently introduced Renault 5 but retains its unique character. While the 5 is all about ‘avec plaisir,’ the focus of the 4 is on versatility, practicality, and broad applicability.

Wider dimensions, familiar base

Compared to the New 5, the Renault 4 is 12 cm longer, 8 cm wider, and has an 8 cm longer wheelbase. Both models share the modular AmpR Small platform and associated technology. The design is reminiscent of the original with elements such as the round daytime running lights and a sloping tailgate. Signature details such as the illuminated Renault logo (standard from the second trim level) and the characteristic roofline with an additional side window complete the look.

Style and enjoyment of life

All versions of the R4 are equipped with 18-inch wheels, while the Techno version offers extra sturdy roof rails. A large canvas roof, available as an option, brings a touch of ‘joie de vivre’ to the interior. The extensive color palette, including contrasting roof options, offers ample personalization possibilities. A striking detail is the slanted sticker on the front wing, standard on the Icon version, which nods to the original lines of the classic 4.

Familiar interior with a twist

The interior of the R4 is very similar to that of the 5, especially in the basic version. Both models have a digital instrument cluster, a large infotainment system, and a multifunction steering wheel. The entry is comfortable and gives the feeling of a slightly higher-positioned 5. The well-adjustable seats ensure excellent seating comfort.

Space and distinction

From the Techno version, the R4 distinguishes itself with the use of denim materials, while the Icon version adds yellow accents and a cushion pattern. The rear seat offers a little more space than in the 5, but remains modest for a crossover in the B-segment. For comparison: a Peugeot e-2008 offers more space.

Impressive loading capacity

The boot is a strong point of the new R4. With a large opening and a low loading sill of just 60 cm, it is very accessible. The boot offers space for 420 liters of equipment and is also supplemented by a spacious storage compartment under the floor. Thanks to the unequally split folding rear seat and the folding front passenger seat, a loading length of no less than 2.2 meters is created – ideal for transporting a SUP board, for example.

Electrical performance

The new Renault 4 comes with two battery options: 40 kWh or 52 kWh, coupled with engines of 120 hp and 150 hp respectively. This results in a range of 300 or 400 kilometers. The car is equipped with an 11 kW on-board charger as standard. Fast charging is possible with up to 80 kW for the 40 kWh battery or 100 kW for the larger battery. A heat pump is part of the standard equipment, while EV route planning via Google Maps ensures a carefree journey.

The new Renault 4 will be available at dealers from the summer of 2025, with prices to be announced in the run-up to the market launch.
