Driving the new Renault 5: Exceeds all expectations

It is the most important car the brand has introduced in a long time. With the new Renault 5, the brand is giving a big boost to its Renaulution. A strategy with which the brand is embracing the rapidly changing car market with all its facets. Technology, connectivity, and clean energy: Renault has set a target on the horizon. The first kilometers behind the wheel of the new Renault 5, which can be ordered for 27,990 euros, show that the first Renaulution fruit has proven to be an absolute golden move.

Thumbs up guaranteed

Earlier this year I was allowed to sniff it in a studio near Paris—the rebirth of an icon, the new Renault 5. A good half year later, a bright yellow (Jaune Pop) Iconic Cinq version is waiting for me. With the new 5, the brand wants to appeal to both the older generation, those who can still remember the original well, and the younger generation. A challenge, but thanks in part to design terms such as ‘retro-futuristic’ I have rarely received so many enthusiastic reactions during an intro. From young to old, from surfer to fashionable lady. The thumbs up were almost countless!

Driving the new Renault 5

Standard 18 inch

The new 5 rolls on 18-inch wheels as standard, which together with the good proportions gives it a strong appearance. When I get behind the wheel, the low and sporty entry immediately catches the eye. I sink into the beautifully shaped furniture and thanks to an axially adjustable steering wheel, a good seating position is quickly found.

Different fit than expected

However, to properly support my thighs, I have to sit a little further back. A tilting seat would be a solution here, as it would also provide some breathing space, especially for passengers in the back seat. Sitting behind myself was not an option.

Spacious enough for luggage

The boot space is also perfectly usable in practice. At 320 liters, it is in line with the segment and more than sufficient for two hand luggage suitcases and two backpacks. If the front seats are set quite far back, you will have to remove the headrests of the rear seat backrests to fold them down.

From 27,990 euros

The new Renault 5 comes with two batteries and two electric motors for the time being. A third with around 90 hp will follow later. The Urban Range with 40kWh and a range of 327 km is available from 27,990 euros. You then get a 120-hp electric motor. The Techno version is 2 grand more expensive and the most complete Iconic Cinq costs 31,490 euros. For just under 30 grand you can step into the Comfort Range Techno. It has a 52kWh battery, a 150 hp engine, and a range of 410 kilometers according to the WLTP test method. A 3-phase 11kW on-board charger, a heat pump,p, and a fast charging time of 30 minutes are standard.

Driving the new Renault 5 Exceeds all expectations

Exceeds expectations

During the dynamic introduction, I drove about 200 kilometers in the Five. Extremely enjoyable kilometers, mind you because in terms of driving quality and fu, it exceeds my expectations. The 5 is as agile as a frisky poodle! The very direct (sometimes a bit too direct) steering system, together with the low center of gravity of the brand new – dedicated EV – AmpR Small platform, provides a mid-engine-like experience. The 5 bites into every corner, feels fantastically agil,e and thanks in part to – unique in this class – a beautiful Multilink suspension for the rear axle, the limit is far beyond that of fun.

MINI drivers can go to the  Renault

And all this in combination with a surprisingly refined driving experience. Within the built-up area, it is far from ‘too stiff’ and even though it could sometimes be a bit more forgiving on a speed bump, this does not bother. The new 5 proves to be so good in this area that it could even convince MINI drivers. Especially because on the highway it also turns out to be a fine cruiser with C-segment-worthy sound insulation.
